The voice acting is soooo bad…

Amazon’s The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct Pre-Order Bonus is the Walker Execution Pack

In case you want to pre-order The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct, still without seeing any actual gameplay footage, Amazon.com’s exclusive pre-order bonus has been revealed as the Walker Execution Pack. With this, you’ll receive weapons for your arsenal that include a survival knife, kukri, combat axe, machete, and advanced machete, perfect for killing zombies without raising too much suspicion.

Other than the GameStop exclusive bonus of ‘Herd Mode‘, we couldn’t find any retailers giving exclusive pre-order DLC for The Walking Dead: Surival Instinct, but we’ll let you know if that changes.

Also of note is that many retailers have shifted their release date of Survival Instinct to March 19th, one week earlier than the official date. We’ve reached out to Activision for confirmation on a possible bump up on the release and we’ll let you know if we hear anything back.

The Walking Dead FPS First Footage Revealed

Activision’s upcoming first-person shooter The Walking Dead received some early leaked test footage of the game featuring the two brothers from the TV series, Meryle and Daryl. The interesting part about the footage isn’t the game itself, but the reaction of the community, which seems to be full of gamers tired of Call of Duty clones.

By all accounts, the game does play out – as you’ll see below – a lot like a Call of Duty title. The shaders still seem in the early stages and the shadowing doesn’t seem finalized, but the actual mechanics seem to be in place, including shooting and stabbing. You can check it out below, courtesy of DSO Gaming.

It reminds me a lot of WarZ but with actual hordes of zombies, which seemed to be missing from Hammerpoint’s FPS.

It’s hard to gauge what this upcoming Walking Dead game will be like based on the small bits and pieces of gameplay there. There’s not a whole lot of exploration going on so it’s tough to see if the game will be linear or semi-open where multiple pathways will be made available.

It’s also hard to gauge what the standard gameplay pace will be like. There are definitely a lot of zombies – too many zombies to actually gun down. However, the zombies seem to go down pretty easy and the regenerating health gives the impression that you have to do a lot of run-stop-and-whack-a-zombie style fighting, ala Dead Island.

As the game draws closer to its release date we’ll be able to tell exactly what kind of game it is. For now, what do you think of Activision’s Walking Dead FPS?

The Mod of the Year 2012: DayZ

If XCOM reminded us of the value of loss in 2012, DayZ was a valuable lesson in hardship. The Arma 2 mod was one of the least-forgiving and most intimidating games of the year. It was a shooter that you entered without a gun. Arma’s control scheme made actions such as inventory management a hassle; its 225km2 landscape asked you to run mini-marathons to get around, often without a map. Permadeath and persistency lent consequence to every action. And in its alpha state, DayZ was buggy and vulnerable to hackers.

1.3 million people played it.

DayZ is heartening; it reinforces what players are willing to put up with in exchange for novel, self-authored experiences. It’s a rare shooter that gives banal tasks such as searching for water or riding a bicycle as much meaning as firing a gun.

Among bandit pursuits, lucky loot runs, mourning the death of friends, and castle raids, one of my unforgettable moments is when my friends and I accidentally orchestrated our own sniping mission. We’d arrived outside Chernarus’ Northwest Airfield: treacherously naked terrain with the potential for military loot.

With empty backpacks, two teammates moved in. If they fired a shot, they’d ring a dinner bell for the undead. But 500 meters away, atop a hill, my sniper rifle was out of earshot. This was an escort mission: their lives were my responsibility, and Arma 2’s ballistics meant I had to lead targets on two axes, manually dial-in my scope, and read my map to estimate ranges. It was a pure and exhilarating shooting experience, but more importantly, an expression of our teamwork. Moments like this in DayZ arise simply as a result of the mechanics, vulnerability, and players’ natural storytelling ability. By being so hands-off with us, DayZ gives us ownership over every moment.

Survival of the Dead: DayZ’s Creator Dean Hall Refuses To Go Easy

The world of DayZ, a multiplayer zombie apocalypse survival mod for Bohemia Interactive’s military sim ARMA II, is cutthroat. Stories of being taken hostage by other gun-toting players, ambushed by bandits and picked off by camping snipers are rampant, more so than tales of zombie-related mayhem.

Graver still is that, unlike most games, when you die in DayZ you lose your character and your gear permanently; you wake up on the beach where you started, fresh and defenceless. Yet, despite the brutality and steep learning curve, DayZ has become a massive success, more talked about and played than ARMA II. It joins the likes of Minecraft, a small, odd endeavour becoming huge, but the rampancy and difficulty of the game is changing what we’ve come to know as a sure-shot game release.

“(The) first time you play DayZ, you could go at it for six hours, meet a lot of friends, assemble a lot of gear,” said Hall.“Then, bam — just get killed by a sniper. There’s a shock that you feel, that you’ve just lost everything.” The challenge of this dog-eat-dog domain is what has millions of players logging in, but Dean Hall himself has only killed another player a single time, and it still bothers him.

It started near Cherno (Chernogorsk), the biggest city on the Russia-inspired map and an infamous killing field. Hall spotted an ensemble of new arrivals. He’s fascinated by his players. “I would always play at night,” said Hall, “follow groups around and see what they did.”
