TWD 2.11 x 3.07

This is an interesting comparison.  Both brothers use violence as a means to extract the information they want.  In 2.11, we, the audience, are on Daryl’s side.  It might be uncomfortable to look at, but it doesn’t alter our opinion of him as one of the ‘good guys’.  If anything, we feel sorry for Daryl being cast in the role of ‘thug’.

In 3.07, Merle is the bad guy.  We’re rooting for Glenn.  He’s one of our group- a young, boyish man, not so different in appearance from Randall.  One could argue that Merle knows Glenn is not a threat to him or the people of Woodbury.  Glenn is not a stranger to him.  Glenn is, however, one of the group who abandoned him in Atlanta, leading him to cut off his own hand.  And Glenn is now withholding the information Merle needs to be reunited with his brother.  It’s personal.  But we don’t feel sympathy for Merle here.  We believe he casts himself in these roles.  He speaks about this in 3.15, I believe.  That he’s the ‘bad guy’, the only one willing to do the dirty work, letting the others keep their hands and conscious clean.  I think in his final episode we are left with the thought that these acts do weigh on him.  And in spite of his brutality in 3.07, Glenn doesn’t tell Merle what he most wants to know.
